Fire Station Artists’ Studios Celebrate 20 Years of Creativity

CLODAGH KENNY, director of the Fire Station Artists’ Studios joins Noel McGuinness to discuss the 20th anniversary of the organisation.

Clodagh talks about the genesis of the studios and how the building has always been a place of work, being previously a fire station. Artists are given grants to live and work in the studio for up to three years at a time.

Clodagh says their plan was always to share the space with members of the community. They place a special focus on training people who – for one reason or another – left the education system early. They have eight residential studios in the space and roughly two of these become available each year, with preference given to international artists. Clodagh says a residency in the Fire Station is great for an artist’s CV and it really helps to have a subsidised living space for their three year residency.
