AIDAN O’TOOLE joins Noel McGuinness to discuss the Donnycarney Tradfest and what it aims to be. Aidan explains how the initiative came about through a committee and Aodhan O Riodhans suggestions. With the area having historical roots in the tradition of Irish music with many notable players the idea grew legs and became a festival.
Aidan details the plans for the 2013 festival and explains how they have had to turn acts away at this stage due to the large number of interested acts. They speak about the selection process and how it yielded seven or eight local groups with roots in Donnycarney.
We hear how the festival will run throughout the week with a number of events for the school children in the area including a performance by the Garda band and a sports day, as well as a football tournament as part of the Craobh Chiaran club. We also hear that historian Pat Liddy will share historical information. They also have organised a Ceili at the Crossroads, based at Donnycarney Church car park.
They mention the Friends of Banjo Barney event which features a host of famous musicians performing in memory of Barney McKenna of the Dubliners.
Lastly they mention a fathers day breakfast and tug o’ war as well as a community mass taking place on the Sunday morning.
