CIARA CAVANAGH joins Noel McGuiness to discuss the Offbeat Ensemble, a new community string orchestra. Ciara explains the genesis of the group. She tells how the main aim of the group is to encourage people who have never played an instrument before can join up and “give it a go”. Ciara explains that there will be atwo groups, one who have some experience and one for complete beginners with people transitioning into the more experienced group as they have built up enough confidence to perform as part of that group. The group is based in St Peters primary school hall in Phibsboro.
Ciara makes an appeal for people to donate instruments, especially stringed instruments to the group so that people who can’t afford to buy their own instrument to begin with, they can borrow one from the groups Intrument lending bank. They plan to perform between two to three concerts per year, beginning with a performance to take place at the end of June 2013.
