Carmen isn’t Only an Opera: A Preview With Ballet Ireland

Play

ANNE MAHER of Ballet Ireland speaks to Noel McGuinness about the origins of the group and the forthcoming production of “Carmen” at the Draoicht and Gaiety theatres.

Although normally one thinks of Carmen as an opera, it is also a ballet and Anne gives a brief history of the arrangement that Ballet Ireland is working from for this presentation.

John Walsh, an Irish flamenco guitarist, will be playing live on stage each night.

The show will travel around Ireland and ties in with performances of The Nutcracker later in the year.

Also discussed are the age profile of ballet dancers and the rigours of their training, discipline, the perfect physique and other attributes required for someone to be a successful Ballerina dancer.

Anne tells Noel how the film “Billy Elliot” had a positive affect on bringing more male dancers into the craft.
