Dublin’s First Festival of History: Presenting the Past, Looking to the Future

Play

BRENDAN TEELING, Deputy City Librarian of Dublin City Libraries, joins Pat Meehan to discuss the upcoming Dublin Festival of History. Brendan says 70,000 history books were borrowed from Dublin libraries in the previous year. This number suggested that there is a huge amount of interest in our nation’s past and that a history festival, tied in with ‘The Gathering’ initiative of 2013, would be of enormous interest.

Features of the History Festival include an open discussion on the Magdalene Laundries, to be held in Dublin Castle, talks and lectures with well-known writers and historians like Simon Schama, Jung Chang and many others. In addition, writer Catherine McMahon will be presenting a creative writing workshop at Dublin Castle.

Brendan says some 4,500 tickets have already been booked for Festival events.
