The effect of deferred Maintenance grant payments for Students in 2013

President of the Union of Students in Ireland, JOE O’CONNOR speaks to Pat Meehan to discuss the impact of cuts in student grants and the rise in college costs for third level students in 2013. Joe talks about of the reality of the situation at the time and tells how many students are struggling financially.

Joe also talks about the issue of delayed payments of the Student Maintenance grant, how a student’s sole income support can leave them in a very difficult situation and the difficulties that are coming from the workflow awarding the grants such as staff shortages or a lack of appropriate training for the workers, the particular hardships such as food and rent that students are experiencing due to the gap and the USI can help students through internal initiatives.
