AOIFE MULHALL of the Dublin Simon Community joins Ronnie O’Brien to discuss the work of the group. Aoife tells of the hardships of running a charity in the recession and shares details of the services which they provide including their nightly soup run around Dublin City.
They talk of how the most recent figure suggested that in april 2012 there were 73 people sleeping rough on the night of the count. Aoife tells that it is important to realis that this figure is the absolute minimum as many spaces such as parks are not represented as part of this number. Aoife tells of how Simon was established in 1969 by students from Trinity College who started by doing a soup run.
Aoife tells of the “Sing for Simon” campaign running in December, there will also be a 24 hour singing marathon taking place on Grafton Street. They make an appeal for people to get involved both as singers and also shaking buckets to raise money at the event. They doscuss an upcoming house of cards campaign taking place which will see many corporate businesses send e-cards, in place of physical cards with the money saved in lieu being donated to the charity, with an exclusive house of light show being projected onto the powerscourt centre.
Aoife tells of the gift appeal which they also offer, including vouchers which people can buy as meaningful gifts
