LAURA DUGGAN worked as a nurse in St Vincent’s Hospital ICU. Here, she tells Noel McGuinness about her voluntary work in Haiti and then Nigeria, where she saw a vast difference between an ultra-modern ICU with TVs at every bed and a Nigerian hospital that had no electricity and she needed a torch to see patients at night. She talks about the prevalence of cholera there when it is eradicated in Western Europe.

Laura also tells Noel about her motivations for volunteering to work abroad and the special training she had to undertake to qualify for this work.
