Pat Meehan talks to MIRIAM KERINS of Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) about the clampdown on the horse markets in Smithfield. The problem as Miriam elaborates is that people are bringing unlicensed animals into the country and then selling them to children as markets like Smithfield. The DSPCA is clamping down on the ill treatment of horses in Dublin.

The DSPCA is working closely with young people in Dublin who own horses to educate and encourage responsible care of horses.

Miriam explains that the DSPCA do not have statutory powers. They are not wardens. They take care of animals. They rescue sick, injured and cruelly treated animals. It costs on average €282 a week to look after a horse.

The Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) is a charity and gets no government funding. The vast majority of the their revenue comes through donations.

The animal welfare act dates back to 1911 and the DSPCA argue that this is archaic by European Standards.
