JOHN DUNNE of the Viking Sub-Aqua Club chats with Noel McGuinness about some unusual dives.
Viking Sub Aqua Club is a Dublin-based scuba diving club. They meet every wednesday night, 9 to 10pm, in the Coolmine Sports & Leisure Centre, Grove Road, Dublin 15.
VSAC has been in existence since 1976. Affiliated to the Irish Underwater Council (comhairle fo-thuinn) which was 50 years old in 2013, CFT is an affiliate member of CMAS (World Underwater Federation) and the European Underwater Federation (EUF). They have several veteran divers, who have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the club.
Training takes place on Wednesday evenings in the pool, with lectures usually taking place beforehand. New trainees are generally enrolled at the end of the year with an ‘open night’ followed by pool training over the winter months before heading into the open water in the new year, starting with some snorkel exercises then open water scuba training before the dive season commences around St Patrick’s weekend.
