Accessing the success of “The Gathering”

Play

FIONAN NESTOR, engagement manager with “The Gathering” joins John Healy to discuss how the gathering has been going over the course of the year. The Gathering has helped tourism number increase by a massive seven percent in the first eight months of the year.

They discuss who organises the individual events and Fionan tells John that it is 100% organised by the people of Ireland. While some events are very big such as Flightfest and the St. Patrick’s parade, most are very small gatherings on a local level which all feed into the bigger initiative. Fionan moves on to discuss the publicity that was created by Gabriel Byrne’s negative statement about the initiative and Fionan talks about the large positive response to the events which have been organised.

They discuss the Beatles festival happening in the city in November to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles playing at the Adelphi Theatre. They also discuss the New Years Eve festival taking place on College Green with acts such as Madness confirmed to play on the night. There will also be a procession of light earlier in the evening.

They briefly discuss the Dublin City marathon which this year will feature 14,500 participants, a new record for numbers taking part. Fionan also speaks about the importance of remembering the smaller events taking place and suggests visiting the website for details of all of these smaller events.
