Local Hardware Shops Boom Even In The Bust

Play

Local Hardware entrepreneur JOHNNY McLOUGHLIN talks to Noel McGuinness about the hardware business he opened despite the ongoing recession.

After a year in business, Johnny says that he is surprised at how well things have been working out. Because people are short of cash, he says, I’m guessing that they’re doing home repairs themselves to save cash, which is good news for me.

There’s a kind of established pattern that I see developing, says Johnny. Someone will do a few jobs in the garden, get the vegetation under control, and then decide that a wall somewhere looks shabby. They decide to paint that, then the house looks shabby. Once the outside’s in order, the inside looks in need of some TLC, and so on.
